Description
Barry Signal Box is located near Barry Island in Glamorgan, Wales. Once controlling extensive yards and a main line it was infamous in the 1960's and 1970's for overlooking the famous steam locomotive scrapyard of Woodham of Barry from where eventually over 200 steam locomotives were rescued for future restoration and use on the heritage and main lines of the UK. The rows of sorry looking locomotives could be seen from the signal box. The 'box was often the first port of call for the many thousands of steam enthusiasts enquiring how they could get to the scrapyard to pay what was then thought to be their last respects to the beloved locomotives. Barry Signal box was recently taken out of use at the end of 2018 control passing to a new Operating Centre. This image is reprocessed from a Kodachrome slide taken in 1970 and yes the photographer, (me) was making the pilgrimage at that time to the scrapyard.....
